That sounds to me like it's just a corrupted file...try downloading it again. Did the fingerprint check out?

As for the app disappearing and the .dmg being left on your desktop, are you dragging xACT/MacFlac to your Applications folder or leaving them in the mounted image (the white rectangular thing)?
